After multiple victories over the roman legions, Thallus still with the army, head towards their final and the most overwhelming confrontation with the Roman legions of Marcus Licinius Crassus. Spartacus' army eventually encountered the Roman legions of Crassus on the open battlefield on the banks of the Sele River. The gladiators rushed through the Roman ranks, colliding with a shield and sword wall. Though the rebels fought valiantly and defeated a large number of Roman troops, they also suffered a large number of casualties. Spartacus gathered his forces and launched an attack on Crassus, who was on his horse and watching the battle from afar. Spartacus attempted unsuccessfully to meet Crassus during the battle, killing two centurions in the process. Spartacus was seriously wounded in the leg during the fighting, according to Appian, and was forced to get down on his knees. Despite his injuries, the rebel leader refused to surrender and fought on, killing some more Roman troops before being overwhelmed and killed. After the defeat of slave army in the third servile war, Thallus is captured, with many of his fellow soldiers being crucified. Spartacus, a lowly barbarian slave whose revolt eventually failed and whose disciples perished in the most heinous of ways, became a modern emblem of the power of freedom and the dignity of mankind.
